Biotechnology University of Washington

The Seattle, Washington, area has three schools within 40 minutes of downtown that offer undergraduate and/or graduate programs for those interested in studying biotechnology. Learn about the required courses and hands-on learning opportunities at these colleges below. This article also has a table of info on tuition rates, campus settings and more for each institution.

  • Located roughly four miles from the city's center, the Seattle campus of the University of Washington offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in bioengineering. Master's programs in pharmaceutical bioengineering and medical engineering are also offered.
  • Shoreline Community College is located in Shoreline, Washington, about 11 miles from downtown Seattle. An associate's degree program is available to provide training for aspiring biotechnology lab specialists.
  • Situated around 37 miles from central Seattle, Bates Technical College offers a biotechnology lab technician associate's degree program.

University of Washington - Seattle Campus

The University of Washington's bioengineering department combines the study of such fields as physical science and medicine. It's currently home to 130 core, adjunct and affiliated faculty members as well as several bioengineering degree and certificate programs.

Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering

Students enrolled in the bioengineering bachelor's degree program learn through hands-on laboratory experiences. Coursework includes topics in biotransport, human physiology, solid mechanics, organic chemistry and bioengineering systems. Students also complete research and design projects in the program's capstone course. For those interested in continuing their education, the university offers a combined bachelor's and master's degree program in bioengineering that takes about five years to complete.

Master of Science in Bioengineering

Curriculum for the master's degree program in bioengineering is designed to improve students' engineering research, teaching and problem-solving skills. Program requirements include a thesis and final exam as well as the completion of at least one lab rotation and teaching assistantship. Coursework includes topics in molecular bioengineering, systems bioengineering and cellular bioengineering.

Master of Pharmaceutical Bioengineering

Students in the pharmaceutical bioengineering master's degree program explore methods for developing new drugs and biomaterials. Coursework covers pharmaceutics, experiment design, molecular biotechnology, cellular biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, translation science and molecular genetics. Program applicants will need a bachelor's degree in a field such as engineering, science or public health. Those with a degree in another field and at least two years of related work experience are also considered.
